Rep. Mark Takano Releases Statement on Shooting Deaths in Louisiana and Minnesota
Washington, D.C. – Rep. Mark Takano (D-Calif.) released the following statement on the shooting deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, who lost their lives during encounters with law enforcement officials in Louisiana and Minnesota, respectively:
“The deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile are horrific tragedies and my heart goes out to their families and loved ones.
“These two shootings, which took place in the same 48 hours, are not isolated incidents. They reflect a problem in our criminal justice system that we cannot ignore. Race plays a significant role in the encounters Americans have with law enforcement. This should offend every American and it is a challenge we must confront. All Americans must be able trust that deadly force will not be used unequally based on the color of their skin.
“Our law enforcement officers have a very difficult and dangerous job and a vast majority of them perform their duty honorably. But when they take the lives of innocent people, they must be held accountable.
“I’m pleased the Department of Justice is reviewing the circumstances the led to Alton Sterling’s death and I hope it launches a similarly thorough investigation into the killing of Philando Castile.
“My thoughts and prayers are with their families.”
